The recent catastrophic earthquake in the island nation of Haiti has brought to light the fragility of life in the face of natural disasters.
Because of the massive loss of life, injuries and devastation to homes in one of our world’s already most poorest nations, I am asking that all parishes and missions in our diocese take up a special emergency collection as soon as possible to assist in the relief efforts for these poor and suffering people.
Funds from this collection will be directed to Catholic Relief Services, the international relief agency for the United States Catholic Church. A letter has been sent to all parishes with specific information on remitting the collection.
Please join me in offering fervent prayers for the victims of this tragedy. We mourn with them and their families, many of whom live in our country and who are desperately seeking to reestablish any kind of contact with beloved relatives.
Our Diocese of Jackson is a generous and compassionate church and I know that we will all respond to this terrible situation with much faith, hope and charity.
God bless each and every one of you!
