Ways to Leave a Legacy

No matter what stage of life you're in, it's never too soon to reflect on the kind of legacy you would like to leave. Whether you are a young family, or in your retirement years, the Foundation can help you find a meaningful way to make a lasting gift.

The Foundation offers an extensive array of methods of giving to meet a donor’s charitable and financial needs. The Catholic Foundation welcomes gifts of cash, securities, property, bequests and other planned gifts that benefit a donor’s charitable goals.

Easy Giving Options

Outright Gifts - The Catholic Foundation accepts gifts of cash, securities or property.

Bequests – Donors can make a bequest of any size through a last will and testament. A donor can bequeath a percentage of their estate, a specific amount of money or a material item to The Catholic Foundation for the restricted use of their parish, school or other organization under the auspices of the Diocese of Jackson. For more information and assistance see Bequest Wording.

Beneficiary Designations – Leave a legacy by naming The Catholic Foundation as a beneficiary of your life insurance, retirement plan or charitable gift annuity.

Memorial and Honorary Gifts - You can remember a family member or a friend by making a gift to a trust in their honor or memory.

Trusts - A trust is a permanent fund set up by the donor. Once established, the principal is never spent. Only the interest earned on the fund's investment is available for distribution. When you set up a trust, you are establishing a perpetual gift that will provide income to your beneficiary for years to come.

  • Parish Trust - Anyone can establish a new Parish Trust with an initial gift of $1,000.
  • Named Trust - Anyone can establish a Named Family Trust with an initial gift of $2,000.

Charitable Gift Annuities - A charitable gift annuity is a contract that allows a donor to give a deferred gift to a trust and receive income for the rest of his or her life, or that of his or her spouse.

This type of gift begins with a simple agreement between the donor and the Foundation: in exchange for a gift of assets, typically cash or stock, the Foundation promises to pay the donor a guaranteed lifetime income. The donor can begin receiving the income immediately or defer payments until reaching a certain age. The donor realizes significant tax advantages -- an immediate charitable tax deduction and consideration of a portion of the income payments as tax-free return of principal.

Upon the death of the last surviving annuitant, the remaining assets go to a Catholic Foundation trust that was selected when the Charitable Gift Annuity was established.

Anyone can establish a Charitable Gift Annuity with an initial gift of $10,000. See our Charitable Gift Annuity Brochure for more information.

Donor Advised Funds - A donor advised fund allows a donor to establish a trust that will provide for one or more of his or her favorite charities under the auspices of the Diocese of Jackson. The donor advises the Foundation when they wish to make a gift to the charity of their choice using the interest of the fund or the principal, whichever the donor chooses. In addition, the donor receives a tax deduction when they deposit into their fund and the charitable dollars appreciate through the interest that the fund earns.

Anyone can establish a Donor Advised Fund with an initial gift of $15,000.

Insurance Policy - A donor can transfer ownership of an insurance policy. The donor names The Catholic Foundation as the beneficiary of the policy and continues to pay the premiums. Upon the death of the insured, The Catholic Foundation will receive the face value of the policy or may cash in the policy to be used for the benefit of the Diocese of Jackson. The donor receives an immediate tax deduction and deductions for future premium payments.

Membership - The Catholic Foundation offers annual memberships, which help to fund the operation of The Foundation. The Catholic Foundation manages over 350 trusts that provide financial assistance to our parishes, schools, and other Catholic organizations of our diocese. All gifts to trusts and interest earned go directly to the trusts. The Catholic Foundation charges no administrative fees or management fees for its work. Our goal is to grow each trust while keeping the principal intact.
